The Daughters of Athena are an underground resistance group fighting against the Color hierarchy in the Rim. The Daughters originated as an offshoot of the Sons of Ares, but operated independently to ensure that resistance against the The Society would continue even if the Sons of Ares were ever wiped out.[1]
History[]
Pre-Saga[]
The Daughters of Athena were founded in 723 PCE when Fitchner au Barca found Athena living as a pirate after her clan's uprising at their orbital helium mine over Jupiter was put down by House Raa troops, and revealed to her that her elders who led the uprising had been acting on the orders of the Krypteia all along. Fitchner tasked Athena with founding an independent rebel cell in the Rim as a redundancy to ensure that the rebellion against the hierarchy would survive even if the Sons of Ares did not.[2]
The original Daughters of Athena consisted of a mix of Reds, Browns, Yellows, Pinks, and Oranges.[3]
For much of their history, the Daughters of Athena had two main focuses. The first was the dissemination of literature and liberal philosophy to gain converts, with an emphasis on recruiting those skilled in research, weapons development, and military construction. The second was the accumulation of military hardware.[1] The latter was accomplished primarily through the covert hijacking of Rim warships.
At some point before 743 PCE, the Daughters of Athena recruited an artificer named Oskanda, who created a hasta etched with the lyrics of The Reaping Song. The blade, which Oskanda named Pyrphoros, was intended to be wielded by Darrow O'Lykos before his decision to give up the Sons of Ares in the Rim.[4]
Golden Son[]
At some point in 742 PCE during or after the events of Golden Son, the Daughters inserted Aurae into the staff of House Raa as a spy and assassin.[5] Her tasks were to gather and pass along information regarding Krypteian or naval matters, as well as to ensure that no true tyrant ever ascended to lead House Raa, and to assassinate any that did.[2]
Morning Star[]
After the Battle of Ilium, the Rim Sovereign Romulus au Raa ordered a purge of all Sons of Ares agents in Rim territory using the intel given up by Darrow O'Lykos in exchange for his aid against the Sword Armada. Because they operated independently from the Sons' chain of command, the Daughters of Athena were able to survive the Krypteia's purge.[1] However, all of the original Daughters lost kin in the process.[3]
Iron Gold[]
Dark Age[]
Light Bringer[]
During Volsung Fá's invasion of Ilium, the Daughters of Athena seized control of The Deep on Europa, which was used to house over seven thousand Daughters[3] and assorted other refugees over the course of Fá's invasion.
