Free Legions

The Republic Expeditionary Force, commonly known as the Free Legions, is the primary expeditionary army of the Solar Republic. Made up of over ten million soldiers divided into multiple individual legions, it is responsible for the majority the Republic's front line military operations since the beginning of the Solar War.

Leadership

As the primary front-line military units of the Republic army, the Free Legions are commanded by the highest ranking Republic officers, including ArchImperator Darrow O'Lykos, as well as Imperators Orion xe Aquarii, Sevro au Barca, and Cadus Harnassus. Other unit commanders include Legate Thraxa au Telemanus and Feranis.

Divisions

There are at least seventeen individual legions that are considered part of the Free Legions:

• The 2^nd Legion, known as the Terran Blacksmiths, under the direct command of Imperator Harnassus.
• The 7^th Legion, known as Pegasus Legion, under the direct command of ArchImperator O'lykos.
• The 15^th Legion, known as Helldiver Legion
• The 17th Legion
• Rat Legion, a unit which fought in the tunnels of Mars.

Involvement

Solar War

The Free Legions were responsible for liberating Mars, Luna, and Earth from the rule of The Society, with the 7th and 15th notably helping to bring an end to the Siege of Olympia.

Once the two planets and their moons were declared free in 751 PCE, the Republic Expeditionary Force were dispatched to invade Mercury in order to destroy the Society Remnant, leading to a siege of the planet that lasted for the next two years.

Iron Gold

In August 753 PCE, the Free Legions bring an end to the Siege of Mercury by launching an Iron Rain against the planet and liberating Mercury from Society control at the cost of one million casualties. While the 7^th legion accompanied Darrow back to Luna as he prepared to petition the Senate for additional troops and funding for an assault on Venus, the other units of the Free Legions remained on Mercury to secure the planet's surface after driving off the Ash Armada.

Dark Age

After the Battle of Caliban, the surviving Free Legions were trapped on the surface of Mercury. Though they were able to retain control of the continent of Helios until early January 754, they were ultimately forced to fall back to Heliopolis after the Battle of the Ladon.

During the Long Night, the majority of the surviving Free Legionnaires were either killed or captured. Cassius au Bellona and Aurae managed to evacuate around two hundred soldiers aboard the Archimedes, including Darrow, Thraxa, Harnassus, and Screwface, while another 2,011 managed to escape into the Hesperides Mountains under the leadership of Colloway xe Char. The remaining Reds and Golds of the Free Legions on Mercury were impaled in two lines from Heliopolis all the way north to the Sycorax Sea, while the other Republic legionnaires were used as slave labor by the Society Remnant to rebuild the planet after the damage inflicted by the Storm Gods during the Battle of the Ladon.
