Hyperion, nicknamed 'the Eternal City' and 'the Jewel of Luna', is the capital city of Luna. It was the capital of The Society until November 743, and after The Fall, it served as the capital of The Solar Republic until the Day of Red Doves in January 754.

Description[]

Hyperion is located on the near side of Luna in the moon's northern hemisphere. It sits on the southern shores of the Sea of Serenity,[1] 500 kilometers south of the Atlas mountains,[2] and has several wharves along the coast where water craft enter and leave the city.[3] Hyperion's center rests 160 kilometers north of the moon's primary commercial spaceport, Atlas Interplanetary Docks.[4]

As with most other cities on Luna, the low gravity and continuous influx of travellers and immigrants has resulted in Hyperion being built in multiple layers, with skyscrapers stretching several kilometers high while multiple pedestrian streets are stacked on top of each other. Rung paths, airCars, public gravLifts, and aerial trains run throughout the city to facilitate travel between levels.[5][6]

Under the reign of The Society, the upper levels of Hyperion are predominantly home to highColor homes and establishments intended to cater to the wealthy, such as the Elorian Opera House or the personal skyscrapers of figures ranging from Olympic Knights to Silver businessmen like Regulus ag Sun. The middle layers were predominantly relegated to the needs of midColors, while the lowest levels on the surface of the moon, colloquially known as The Lost City,[6][6] make up the slums of the city largely inhabited by lowColors and the city's poorer population. The closer one gets to the ground, the fewer the lights, the dirtier the buildings, and the stranger the animals.[6]

On the Promenade, the city's uppermost pedestrian layer, the center of Hyperion is home to the Hyperion Museum of Antiquities,[7] a museum housing relics, artifacts, and other material to educate visitors on the ancient history of The Society. The Promenade is also home to various attractions such as the Cerebian Zoo and the Pallas art gallery.[8] Following the founding of the Solar Republic, statues depicting heroes of The Rising such as Darrow O'Lykos and Orion xe Aquarii were erected in a plaza that became known as Hero Center.[8] Other landmarks of the Promenade level include the Via Appenia, a major road that runs north from Hero Center,[9] and the Circada Maxima, the moon's most famous ripWing racing circuit.[8][10][11] The city is also home to at least two Pink breeding facilities, the Dryope and Hysperia Gardens,[5][12] as well as Aristotle Park and an attraction known as the Gravity Gardens.[13] Additional public parks are scattered across the city, with many of them presided over by statues of the Golds of the Conquering.[14]

The city is divided into multiple districts, such as the Evenstar and Sordo districts,[15][16] Alpha City,[17][18] and Old Town,[10] The latter of which is located in the southern portion of the city, below the Promenade layer.[13] As one of the presumably older portions of the city, the buildings in Old Town are considerably seedier and more rundown than those of the Promenade levels.

Citadel of Light[]

The government and military command of both the city and the moon as a whole operates from the Citadel of Light, a large complex on the western edge of Hyperion. Separated from the city proper by a ring of forests and trees, the campus encompasses several kilometers of buildings, gardens, and hills.[8][19] The famous Palatine Hill, located in the northwest portion of the grounds, is home to several landing pads, residential quarters for major officials, and the Hyperion Politico School.[5][19][20][21][22] Southeast of the Palatine lie the Esqueline Hills, home to several gardens and villas used for visiting Gold dignitaries during the reign of The Society, and as quarters for the supporters of Virginia au Augustus during the Solar Republic.[7][8][23]

The western campus is full of skyscrapers, with the spire dedicated to the quarters of The Sovereign and their subordinates sitting two kilometers from the Esqueline Hills in the center of the Citadel's gardens.[24] The Sovereign's spire is the highest point on Citadel grounds,[25] and is home to a device known as the Occular Sphere, a glass chamber suspended above the tip of the spire like an upside down teardrop.[26] The roof of the spire houses at least one landing pad,[27] along with a large garden where The Society's decennial summit would be hosted.[24] Underneath this spire, a two-kilometer gravLift known as the Dragon Maw runs under the surface of the moon to a top secret bunker used to ensure the protection of The Sovereign in the event of an invasion.[27] A network of tunnels connects the Citadel campus above to a series of secondary fallback bunkers with additional tunnels installed as an escape route.[28]

The easternmost portion of the Citadel campus is home to the Forum, where the Senate convenes to propose, debate, and vote on legislation.[8][22][26][29][30] Under the rule of The Society, the Forum was constructed in the shape of a pyramid, but was later rebuilt into a dome by the Solar Republic.[22] The Citadel also contains offices for the Senators and the Sovereign, as well as military command, the central intelligence agency, and the judiciary, renamed under the Republic to the Sunhall, Skyhall, Starhall, and Moonhall, respectively.[9][31][32] The Moonhall building is topped by a golden dome with a statue of a blindfolded lady representing Liberty carrying a set of scales.[31] After the founding of the Republic, a 100-meter monument commemorating Fitchner au Barca known as the Obelisk of Ares, depicting the founding events of the Sons of Ares and the Rising, was installed in the Moonhall courtyard, floating 10 meters off the ground.[31]

There are at least two parks on the grounds of the Citadel, with one near the center of campus and the other on the east side of the Forum, just past the Arch of Silenius that stands over the Citadel's main gate.[26][32] East Park is a large public plaza filled with shops and food stalls, and marks the end of the Via Triumphia, the stone road that leads to the steps of the Forum from Hyperion proper.[29][32] The plaza is also home to a public train station that runs a circuit between the Citadel and the center of the Promenade level, with the Hyperion Station on the Promenade being only a five-kilometer walk from the Museum of Antiquities.[8] A secondary tram route takes passengers to the main Citadel station from other transit hubs around campus, such as the southern Esqueline Hills.[8]

History[]

Pre-Saga[]

Hyperion was founded sometime before The Conquering, and became capital of The Society after the Golds successfully rebelled against Earth. The Dragonmaw lift and attached bunker beneath the Citadel of Light were both constructed sometime before the war, and after, their existence became a heavily classified secret, with the Dragon Maw fading into myth.[27]

Aristotle Park was built in the city by the early 7th century PCE, with at least one of the sycamore trees there going on to live through the reigns of at least five Sovereigns.[3]

Golden Son[]

Morning Star[]

Sevro au Barca uploading the footage of Darrow's carving onto the holoNet sparked mass unrest in Hyperion, leading to bombings on the Palatine Hill and protests at the gate of the Citadel of Light over the course of 742 to 743 PCE.[33] The unrest intensified after Darrow's speech sparking the Battle of Phobos in June 743 sparked riots in Lost City that lasted for several months up until The Fall in November 743.[27][34]

Solar War[]

After the fall of Octavia au Lune, Hyperion became the capital of the new Solar Republic, and was the site of major fighting during the Battle of Luna from 744 to 746 PCE, with the Republic fighting block to block to keep control of the city from the Society Remnant in what became known as the Block Wars. During and after this period, crime in Hyperion worsened, with The Syndicate expending their influence from Lost City up to the highest layers and the criminals and killers of Luna running rampant despite Republic action.[7]
