The Krypteia is the secret police and intelligence agency of the Moon Lords, responsible for maintaining the Color hierarchy in the Rim at all cost.[1] Agents of the Krypetia are marked with an onyx implant on the back of their hand, shaped like a snake devouring its own tail.

Background[]

Pre-Saga[]

The Krypteia was founded by House Raa several generations prior to the Rising.[2] While they also served as an intelligence agency for the Moon Lords, their primary purpose was to kill anyone who threatened the hierarchy.

Gaia au Raa served as leader of the Krypteia for half of her life. It is not specified whether her tenure began before or after the First Moon Lord's Rebellion, however the use of past tense when her career is referenced indicates that she retired from the role sometime before 755 PCE.

After the Burning of Rhea, Octavia au Lune gave the order to hunt down all members of the Krypteia. Octavia told others, including her grandson Lysander, that the organization was purged completely. In reality, several agents survived, including Venator Pandora, and the organization remained active for several decades afterward. It is unknown whether Octavia was aware of this.

Sometime between 720 and 723 PCE, the Krypteia engineered an uprising in one of the Rim's helium mining facilities orbiting Jupiter.[3] On the orders of the Krypteia, the elders of the Red clan that led the uprising seized control of the mine and then began executing hostages to portray Reds as bloodthirsty animals who needed to be kept in check. After House Raa soldiers came and exterminated the rebels, at least one of the elders was spared and allowed to live in luxury far away from the mine where he sparked the uprising as a reward for his service.

Morning Star[]

After the Battle of Ilium, the Rim Dominion Sovereign Romulus au Raa ordered a purge of all Sons of Ares agents in the Rim using the intel Darrow offered in exchange for his aid in the battle. The Krypteia carried out this purge by capturing, interrogating, and executing a total of 13,412 Sons of Ares from Jupiter to Pluto.[4] Many of the interrogations were conducted on Europa in The Deep.[5]

Following the loss of the Sons of Ares, the Krypteia began attempts to track and kill Athena, the leader of a separate rebel organization known as the Daughters of Athena.[6]

Iron Gold[]

When Seraphina au Raa trespassed into Solar Republic territory to obtain evidence of Darrow's destruction of the Ganymede Dockyards, Venator Pandora interrogated Seraphina's Obsidian Hjornir under the orders of Maris au Raa. After confirming her destination and return vector, Romulus sent Pandora and a fleet of Rim warships under the Krypteia's command to retrieve her, accompanied by his son Diomedes.

Light Bringer[]

During the Obsidian invasion of Ilium, Krypteia agents attempted to assassinate Volsung Fá in Demeter's Garter on Io. While their disguises were flawless, Fá was able to detect them. The agents were skinned, castrated, and leashed to Fa's throne.

  3. Details in Light Bringer place Athena's recruitment by Ares and the founding of the Daughters of Athena in 723 PCE. Chapter 59 establishes that Athena appears to be in her late forties as of early 755 PCE, and in chapter 62 she explains that this uprising occurred when she was 15 years old. Athena describes how Ares found her when she had fallen in with pirates after the uprising. At the oldest, Athena would be turning 50 in late 755 PCE, meaning that the uprising cannot have occurred before 720 PCE.
