The Exposure is a test created by the Board of Quality Control to determine whether a Gold baby who is considered to be of a lower quality than the average Gold can continue to live.
The baby is left alone on a rock, exposed to the elements, for three days, without any care giving from anyone, including the mother. If the baby is found alive after the three days are up, then they can continue to live on as a Gold, though they may not have the same quality of life as other Golds.
The only Golds mentioned in the books to have survived The Exposure are Fitchner au Barca and the Jackal. In the Jackal's case, the Board of Quality Control didn't actually order the Exposure, but his father, Nero au Augustus, insisted on it anyway because he thought his son was weak.[1]
